travel post: road trip guide

it’s a little late – sorry i’ve been super busy with work and also ~personal problems~, basically it’s been one of my sad weeks, which i might elaborate on in a later post if anyone wants to know about it.

but today’s post is super happy! because the memorial day weekend road trip was a HUGE success!! and since i’ve taken much shorter trips with some regularity/frequency, i have some well-worn advice for would-be roadtrippers..

my trip via google maps!
  • DRIVE SAFE – clearly this should be a no-brainer, but seriously…not only when it comes to drinking/driving, but sleepy drivers also are a huge danger!! In fact, 23% of adults know someone who crashed due to sleeping at the wheel. Until self-driving cars are for REAL, just pull over to a motel and sleep! It’s not worth it!
  • Along that line, take reasonable driving shifts (2-5 hours was what me and my boyfriend did), and take breaks whenever needed. Enjoy the ride; it’s an adventure, not a race!
  • USE EASY PASS. This improves your trip 100% because otherwise you need exact change for some tolls, plus you get stuck in allllll the toll booth traffic…and it’s a lot, trust.
  • Rest stops on interstates are mostly really nice, especially on 80W in Ohio, and 95 N and S in every state I’ve driven on it! So don’t be afraid to stop frequently to use the ~facilities~ or get an iced coffee and fuel up! 🙂
  • Music/comedy while driving is awesome! I sang along to several of my CDs when driving, while Eric stayed on the SiriusXM Lithium (90s alt/grunge rock) the entire time he drove haha. Music can be a great way to stay alert/involved with the drive, especially if your co-driver/co-pilot is resting when you’re driving…PS driver ALWAYS gets to pick the tunes! 😉

a v small part of my CD collection including the ke$ha remix album and PatD!

  • PACK WATER AND SNACKS!! Rest stops have come a long way from what they were, but greasy foods are still the main source of fuel here. For my drives, we always take several sandwiches, tons of small bottles of water, and snacks such as protein packs, cheese bites, bananas and other hand fruits like plums, beef jerky and chocolate! This is also a way to save a couple bucks, since you’ll be spending some money on gas anyway.
  • Bring a travel journal, phone or camera to record all your awesome memories 🙂 Driving is such an awesome way to experience traveling in America, and it’s pretty convenient if you own a car, so make the most of it!

Lastly, I wanna let you know about roadtrippers.com – it’s a great resource for planning a road trip or even a day trip around your area to different attractions or points of interest! You can also estimate the gas cost of your trip easily with that site, so you can figure out how much money to ask for from your friends who are road tripping with you!

What’s your best road trip advice?

have a happy memorial day! get some sun!

exercise often! + protein

short post about my exercise habits of recently: finished the Blogilates Beginner’s 2.0 Calendar recently. It’s amazing…nothing has kicked my ass like this since going to sports practice every day in college and high school, and even then not every day was conditioning moves like these are. if you think pilates is lame and easy, you clearly haven’t tried it, because it kicks my ass as well as the asses of my big male roommate and my super athletic boyfriend who can run 5 miles like it’s nothing even when he hasn’t gone on a run for weeks.

speaking of my boyfriend:

do u think hes a #morningperson

there he is, drinking a soy-based protein shake for breakfast this morning. yay breakfast in bed! i’m trying out soy as i’ve tried whey before but the soy was cheaper and i have dairy probz anyway.

candice’s best morning shake recipe (1 serving):

1 scoop soy protein powder

1 cup unsweetened almond milk (~30 cal/cup)

handful of blueberries and half of banana

Liquify in a blender for like 15 seconds and you’re good to go~

also proof positive of my progress (yay alliteration)

taken yesterday, so today was the rest day

I was planning on getting myself a reward after successfully finishing the beginner’s 2.0 calendar…but I can’t decide what to get? The Fitbit Aria scale? New workout gear? SQUISHIES???

any ideas? what are your guys’ workout goals?

music report: #ThrowbackThursday

spotify has a decades section, and i usually dip into that for #THROWBACKTHURSDAY. i’m fond of old tunes and discovering stuff that i wouldn’t know by just growing up from 93-today.

but i also always make it a point to check out the official spotify #throwbackthursday playlist. and i’m here to report back and tell everyone to listen to it during work today.

official description: Kickin’ it back to the chart toppers of 2006…#SpotifyTBT #ThrowbackThursday

currently i’m listening to run it by chris brown, and just before that miss new booty was on. A+ nostalgic middle school vibes…it’s 3 hours long. bliss.

in 2006 i turned 13. what do you guys remember from the mid 2000s? did you wear camisoles under cropped sweaters like i did?

honestly why are blackheads such a big deal anyway

i have a love/hate relationship with my face.

in reality, i am far from ugly, and my bone structure and skin has honestly been a blessing from God. which is all pretty irrelevant anyway, blah blah beauty constructs and pressure to be beautiful is irrelephant, blah blah.

anything-unrelated-is-irrelephant

^scientific graph

but honestly in spite of that, it seems that everyone is always fighting a war on their blackheads…i’ve fought this war for many, many, MANY years, through many products. yeah, some stuff helps a LITTLE…but they’re always there. because face it, your pores, especially in some places like your nose, are just a bit or a lot larger and stuff from life gets in them! (especially now…i call summer blackhead season cause the sunscreen makes it worseeee).

so i’ve come to this place of ACCEPTANCE: my blackheads will always be there and honestly no one can see them form a comfortable talking distance. some of this acceptance has come from my new take on makeup: less is more, and some from the shear need to use sunscreen and thus make the blackhead presence worse.

so long story short, embrace your skin, try to take care of it, but ultimately you’re not made of porcelain so it’ll never look like a photoshopped picture. here’s my average daily skin routine, without any fancy frills (1x a day!):

CLEANSE:

letthegoodtimesroll

let the good times rolllll

this stuff is literally gold. exfoliating, but gentle enough on my delicate paper like face to use everyday. i rub it down in the shower and then wash off! also it smells like popcorn and butterscotch. yum.

for days when i want a bit more in my daily cleanse, i use what my boyfriend also uses almost on the reg:

darkangles

dark angels. its black on the inside like my heart

this stuff is stimilar to LTGTR above, but a bit harsher. it’s appropriate to use on my boyfriend’s backne.

TREAT:

greaselightning

grease lightning, i use it as a spot treatment

post-shower, i spread a tiny bit of this onto my T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) which is most prone to pimples, especially before my period. i only use a VERY TINY THIN LAYER because otherwise this feels sticky and gross on my face. but the tea tree oil helps keep my face mostly red pimple free.

TONE:

teatreewater

tea tree water! for refreshingness

after treating with GL, i spray tea tree water all over my face. this gets rid of extra cleanser left over and refreshess my entire face, while giving my face a tiny bit more of tea tree oil. when i’m feeling extra sensitive i skip GL above and just use this as the % of tea tree oil is much less here.

MOISTURIZE:

cosmeticlad

the cheapest of the lush moisturizers, aimed towards men lol

i let TTW above sit and absorb on my face for a minute, usually while i apply fake tanner/lotion to my legs. then i finish my face with cosmetic lad, which is a rather light moisturizer that doesn’t leave my face feeling greasy! it also smells really awesome almost like a creamsicle. a little bit goes a long way!

And that’s it! In the summertime before spending time outside I apply a sunblock as well, but I haven’t decided on my favorite one yet so I’m not making any recommendations here. Also – I KNOW these are all lush products. I use them because I like that they don’t test on animals and because they feel best on my face after years of trial and error…although I’m looking forward out different things this summer…especially when i travel…

What’s your favorite skin product??

long winded introduction

i figured i needed a reference post/intro post to reference later…but honestly writing all about myself in paragraphs was super boring. for myself. as in, i bored myself.

so i thought, you know what’d be fun? if i could find one of those old style questionnaires or surverys from the myspace/early early facebook era, that you would post to notes and tag your friends. i couldn’t find a good introduction one by googling, but i did find this link: http://hellogiggles.com/30-questions-ask-best-friend/ and i’m going with it, so i guess if you’re reading this you are my new best friend! exciting.

1. Who are your top three lady heroes?

My mom, she’s the best thing I have in this life, Hillary Clinton because she’s running for president and that’s so amazing, and I can’t possibly pick a third because it’s tied between like 18 female musicians and Cassey Ho who whipped my butt into shape recently. Also the Queen of England. And my sort-of boss.

2. When you were little, what did you want to be?

I remember wanting to be as astronaut, a bride (no possibility of being a princess from an early age…my ancestors are literally thieves), or a pop star.

3. Who do you think should run for president in two years?

i love dated internet articles

4. What’s the best book you’ve read so far this year? Ever?

This year, probably the Cinder series – I read it just because I was stunningly bored and I love YA fiction, and it captivated me!

5. What makes you feel afraid?

Not ever finding love (#deep), heights, needles, failure, missing out, and hangovers!

6. Would you rather get lunch with Gillian Flynn or J.K. Rowling?

NEITHER. I hate harry potter (read 1-5 and then wanted to die so I stopped) and I didn’t read Gone Girl but I saw the movie and let me tell you that is the most ridiculous plotline ever. I watch a lot of real, documentary style crime shows. That stupid crazy woman would’ve been found out like immediately. What a dumb story.

7. What’s your most embarrassing childhood memory?

Childhood…there are a lot but I’ll pick the time in 4th grade when my crush found out I liked him because I wrote our initials in a heart on my desk…and then he confronted me about it…and I just ran away and hid in the bathroom. Solution for every romantic problem!

8. If you had the option of adopting a baby fox or baby koala, which one would you choose?

Fox. I’ve heard koalas can be vicious.

9. What’s your dream job?

Being able to graduate with a PhD without much anxiety. sigh.

10. Who is your favorite mythological god/goddess?

Hard question. I guess Isis, because of the Elizabeth Taylor line in Cleopatra, “I AM ISIS!” I love that movie and how Cleopatra believed she was Isis was captivating.

11. Who was your first crush?

The first I can remember was a boy named Will in the 4th grade.

12. If you had to choose between using Internet Explorer forever, or permanently using an AOL e-mail address, which one would it be?

AOL email. It’s vintage. IE just crashed a lot/popups. Yuck.

13. If you could either be a duck or an owl, which would you be?

Owl! They’re cute little PREDATORS

14. What do you love about yourself most?

Physically – my lips. personality wise, probably my sense of humor or my ability to feel emotions so intensely.

15. What don’t you like so much?

I overreact a lot, and can be over-sensitive, or over-analytic. Physically I struggle with my size….don’t crucify me I know I’m thin, I just struggle with wanting to be /thinner/.

16. Rugrats or Doug?

Doug ❤

17. Which house would you belong to in Game of Thrones? Like, very honestly.

i wouldn’t be caught dead watching that ridiculous show

18. If you got a (new) tattoo, what would it be of?

I wouldn’t get a tattoo, ever.

19. What would you like to eat for your last meal?

oysters, caviar, a full Maine lobster shelled for me, and so much champagne my head would be spinning. Good, dry champagne too

20. If you had to be on a reality TV show, which one would you choose?

my own or one starring myself and my roommate, Connor. Network: bravo, because E! is just E!mbarrassing

21. Who has influenced you the most?

that’s a really weird question. The Catholic Church/God, and Lady Gaga from 2008-2010, but then also the falling apart of the fashion industry and living in metropolitan areas for most of my life.

22. What are your favorite lyrics?

I could never answer that question…but my favorite album to listen to recently is Lovetap! by smallpools. i like the song killer whales:

you called to say/can you live with my mistakes?/cause you are the one they spoke about/i never believed i’d make it out/you weren’t around for quite a while/were you saving all the killer whales?

23. Real jeans or jeggings?

pajama jeans

24. On the first day of ruling the world, what would you do?

that’s such a loaded question. probably give ASPCA cops 100% more funding to bust animal abusers, then hold a meeting with powerful people to discuss ways to crack down on human trafficking. then fly to paris and eat a macaron.

25. If you were forced to open a bakery, what would you name it?

pup cakes

26. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever done on a date?

One of my first boyfriends, our first date was to a movie and i was desperately hoping he’d hold my hand, or lay it flat out which i could take as a signal…he put his hand vertically up on the arm rest thinking that was enough of a signal (it wasn’t, it looked strange and i was 15), and i was so thrown by this whole thing that i stared at his hand for 2 hours and missed the entire movie. seriously

27. What do you hope to achieve by 50?

-don’t have to ask my parents for money anymore

-successfully have 2 kittens be happy friends in my home

-children

-PhD

28. What has been your best moment this year (so far)?

this year’s been pretty great overall despite moments of scariness….but i have to pick the one in recent memory, last weekend being in pittsburgh with 2 of my best best friends, eating a salad with fries on it and playing the old game dreamphone! it was a rainy day but seriously so good. such a good saturday ❤

29. Would you rather be stuck in traffic for two hours, or have Chipotle run out of guacamole forever?

i’d burn down chipotle before i’d sit 10 minutes in traffic

30. Why are you so amazing?!

i’m an average amount of amazing. sometimes i do good things and sometimes i stay in bed all day watching criminal minds. i’m just a girl trying her best 🙂

i’m smiling and not moody so it cant go on instagram
